Canada Stock market –  a brief explanation

About TSX

Canada’s most extensive stock exchange, the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX), serves as the primary platform for investors to trade stocks in Canada. This is located in Ontario, Canada.  Having a heritage dating back to 1861, the TSX has transitioned from a physical trading floor in Toronto to a cutting-edge electronic trading system in 1997, pioneering this shift among stock exchanges. Currently TSX is fully electronic and has 1500 + listed companies.  

TSX is the third largest in North America where first and second are New York Stock Exchange (NYSE)

and the Nasdaq. It trades company shares, ETPs(Exchange traded products), investment trusts, bonds, futures, options, commodities and derivative products. 

TSE 300 composite Index

We all know what S&P 500 is. If not, let me tell you what it is. Abbreviated as Standard & Poor’s 500 Index, consists of 500 prominent publicly traded American corporations placed based on weightage of its market capitalization. Like it is for the USA, TSX launched such a weighted market capitalization index for Canada, which is called the TSE 300 Composite index. This was launched in 1977 and consists of prominent publicly traded companies. Later it was renamed to S&P/TSX Composite Index in 2002.  The index undergoes rebalancing every quarter, occurring in March, June, September, and December.

About TSX Venture Exchange

Initially known as the Canadian Venture Exchange was later renamed to TSX Venture Exchange or TSXV. TSXV  was initiated in 1999 and located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Currently it has 1600 listed companies. The difference between TSX and TSXV is that TSXV has smaller companies whose assets and market value is lesser than the requirements of TSX. 

TSX Venture 50

As we saw, what the S & P 500 and TSE 300 composite Index is. Same concept,  index maintained by TSX venture Exchange is known as TSX venture 50. This has the 50  most popular and strong stocks of the TSX Venture Exchange that are grouped. The companies selected  are from industries such as Clean Technology and Life Sciences, Diversified Industries, Technology, Energy, and Mining.

TMX Group

TMX Group has its headquarters in Toronto, ON, Canada. It is an integrated exchange group encompassing multiple asset classes. Both TSX and TSXV are owned and operated by TMX group. TMX also owns Montreal Exchange, TSX Alpha Exchange, and Shorcan. TMX group is also one of the listed companies in TSX and is trading as TSX:X
